Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is a warning or indication of a future event. This can be important because it shows the reader that something big is going to happen and it is going to change the story. An example of this would be when Pickering kept telling Higgins that bringing in Eliza was a bad idea. It was a bad idea because Eliza would end up being hurt and he didn't want that to occur.
